Football Season 2011
The CC&FC Football Season 2011 was an action packed one with record numbers of teams participating in the Merchants Cup and a long season for our club teams.
We started the season by putting up two teams in the annual Calcutta Parsee Club 5 a side tournament where one team reached the Semi Finals while the other was unlucky to lose out in the final.
The Merchants Cup 2011 had 64 teams that maximum we could accommodate in the 3 week tournament. The corporate teams enjoyed the tournament and are even more enthusiastic about the tournament in May 2012.
During the season out "Reds" team played some reputed teams in Exhibition matches. We played the Salgaocar SC team in 5 a side match in May just a couple of weeks before they were crowned Champions of India by winning the I-League. We also played the United Sikkim Sports Club who this season were the Champions of the I-League 2nd Division.
During the 11 a side season we played Kingfisher East Bengal, McDowells Mohun Bagan, Bhowanipore Club all reputed teams around India. Our most credible result was a 0-0 draw versus the Football Players Association Mixed XI for the Debanjan Sen Memorial Trophy a team consisting of no less than 9 national team players.
Our weekend matches continued with the Whites and Blues having a few good matches while a Veterans team played every alternate week on a weekday which where some of the club veterans football players came out to play matches against mixed teams consisting of former players of the Indian Football circuit. They also had a successful tour of Nepal during the season.
Our youth team also played matches on Sundays versus school and academy teams and it was good to see parents coming out on a Sunday afternoon to encourage them on.
At the end of the season the Reds and Whites teams took part in the Phuket Soccer 7s where the Whites playing in the over 35s category played particularly well reaching the Semi Finals of the main plate and losing to the eventual champions.
The Season 2011 was a good one but we hope that the Season 2012 that everyone is looking forward to will be even better.

Phuket Tour Report
The Opens practiced hard for the tournament but seemed to not be able to adjust to the pitch conditions and 7 a side format. Lost their matches by the following margin:
First match 0-1
Second match 1-2
Third Match 0-2
Quarter Finals of Bowl 0-1 (via a penalty) Team played well to create many chances but could not convert. We dominated the game but unfortunately conceded a penalty in the dying minutes of the match.
The Masters team on the other hand performed well. Their results were:
First match won 3-2 (Javed hattrick)
Second match lost 0-2
Quarter finals of the Main Cup we Won 2-0 (Javed & Bruce) and moved into the Semi Finals of the Cup.
Cup Semi Finals lost 0-2 to a very strong Australian Team who went on to win the tournament.
Overall it was a competitive tournament and almost every match in both Opens and Masters were close fights with CC&FC being able to match much physically stronger and bigger opponents from Australia, Germany, England, Singapore, etc.
The hotel facilities were good as usual and travelling on Thai throughout was beneficial as there was no problems of missing flights due to timings etc. Ground transportation was good. On Friday and Saturday night the nights before the tournament all players were back early and adequately rested so fitness was not a problem and all gave their best. |
